Introduction to the Gear Ratio Calculator

The Gear Ratio Calculator is a free online tool that finds the ratio between two gears or sprockets using the formula Gear Ratio = Driven Teeth / Driver Teeth. It also outputs the driven RPM and torque multiplication, helping you size gear pairs without manual math.

Indian users from automotive workshops, mechanical engineering colleges and small manufacturing units rely on this gear reduction calculator daily. Whether you are tuning a bike sprocket setup, designing a conveyor drive or solving a college project on gear trains, the gear ratio formula stays central. Related concepts like mechanical advantage, output speed and torque multiplication all flow from this single ratio.

Inputs are the driver gear teeth count, driven gear teeth count and input RPM. Outputs are the gear ratio, driven RPM and torque ratio, so you can decide if your design gives speed or torque.

Who Should Use This Gear Ratio Calculator

  1. Automobile mechanics in Pune fine-tuning bike sprocket combinations for better acceleration on city roads.
    1. Mechanical engineering students in Chennai solving gear train problems for university lab and viva exams.
    1. Small factory owners in Coimbatore designing conveyor belt drives and pulley systems for textile units.
    1. DIY auto enthusiasts in Bengaluru modifying car differentials for off-road and rally weekend builds.
    1. CNC machine operators in Ahmedabad checking spindle and feed gear ratios before production runs.

Tips for Gear Ratio Design

Smart Gear Ratio Tips

  1. For speed, use a driver gear larger than the driven gear so the ratio falls below 1 and output RPM rises.
    1. For torque, use a driver gear smaller than the driven gear so the ratio crosses 1 and torque is multiplied.
    1. Keep compound gear trains to 3-4 stages, since each stage adds 2-5 percent power loss in real Indian workshop conditions.
    1. Match motor capacity in HP and KW to the calculated output torque before placing orders worth Rs 50,000 or more.
    1. Cross check sprocket ratios against IS 2403 standards used by Indian gear and chain manufacturers.

Formula Explanation

Core Gear Ratio Formula

Gear Ratio = Driven Gear Teeth / Driver Gear Teeth Driven RPM = Driver RPM / Gear Ratio Torque Ratio = Gear Ratio

Where:

  • Driver Gear Teeth = teeth on the input gear connected to the motor
    • Driven Gear Teeth = teeth on the output gear connected to the load
    • Driver RPM = input shaft speed in revolutions per minute

Example: A driver gear with 20 teeth running at 1500 RPM drives a 60 tooth gear. Gear Ratio = 60/20 = 3:1. Driven RPM = 1500/3 = 500 RPM. Torque is multiplied 3 times.

Real-World Example

Example: Rahul's Bike Sprocket Upgrade

Meet Rahul, a 26 year old service engineer from Pune who rides a 150cc commuter bike for his daily 40 km office trip. He wants better top end speed on the Mumbai-Pune expressway without losing too much pickup in city traffic.

Step 1: Rahul notes his stock setup is 14 teeth front and 42 teeth rear, giving a ratio of 42/14 = 3:1. Step 2: He tries a 15 tooth front sprocket, giving 42/15 = 2.8:1, a lower ratio for higher speed. Step 3: At 6000 engine RPM, output rises from 2000 RPM to 2143 RPM at the wheel.

Result: Rahul gains roughly 7 percent top speed, accepts a 7 percent drop in pickup torque, and spends only Rs 450 on the new sprocket from his local Pune dealer.
