Why "how old am I" is trickier than it looks
Quick, how old are you in years, months and days? Most of us know the years and freeze on the rest. The trouble is that months don't share a length. February runs 28 days, sometimes 29. Because it pulls the real length of each month, and notices February in a leap year, the result reflects the calendar as it actually ran, not an average.
A worked example with two dates
Suppose someone was born on 18 August 1995, and you want their age on 16 June 2026.
Start with the days. The 16th is earlier in the month than the 18th, so you borrow from May, which has 31 days. That turns 16 into 47, and you subtract 18 to get 29 days. Borrowing one month leaves you counting from August across to a borrowed-down June. Work through the months and you land on 9 months. Then the years: 2026 minus 1995, minus the one you borrowed, gives 30 years.
So the answer is 30 years, 9 months and 29 days. Try doing that in your head at a bank counter.
