Introduction to the Fraction Calculator
The Fraction Calculator performs the four basic operations on fractions using standard arithmetic: addition a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd, subtraction a/b - c/d = (ad - bc)/bd, multiplication a/b x c/d = ac/bd, and division a/b divided by c/d = ad/bc. It then simplifies the result by dividing numerator and denominator by their GCD.
Indian students from Class 6 through Class 10 study fractions deeply in NCERT and state board syllabi. Chapter 7 of Class 6 NCERT introduces fractions; Class 7 expands to addition and multiplication; Class 8 deals with rational numbers including negative fractions. Beyond school, fractions appear in JEE algebra, NEET dimensional analysis, CA Foundation, and SSC quantitative aptitude.
You enter two fractions (numerator and denominator each), pick an operation, and optionally mark them as mixed fractions. The tool returns the result as a simplified proper fraction, mixed fraction, decimal, and percentage. It handles negative numbers and zero correctly.
Who Should Use This Fraction Calculator
Class 6 students like Karan in Indore working on NCERT Chapter 7 exercises need this to verify homework on adding fractions with different denominators. Class 10 students like Aditi in Coimbatore solving rational numbers and surds use it for quick verification before board exams. ICSE Class 8 students like Vikram in Kolkata facing trickier mixed fraction problems need it for cross-checking. Working parents like Manish in Lucknow helping kids with maths homework use it as a fast verification tool. Polytechnic and CA Foundation students like Anjali in Hyderabad encountering fractions in algebra and accounting ratios use it during exam prep.
Tips for Working with Fractions
Smart Fraction Tips
For addition and subtraction, always find the LCM of denominators first. Adding 1/4 and 1/6: LCM is 12, so 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12. Trying to add without LCM is a common mistake that costs marks in NCERT exercises.
Simplify before multiplying when possible. 8/15 x 25/16: cancel 8 and 16 (gives 1 and 2), cancel 25 and 15 (gives 5 and 3). Result: (1 x 5)/(3 x 2) = 5/6. Much cleaner than 200/240 simplified.
Convert mixed fractions to improper before any operation. 2 and 3/4 becomes 11/4. Trying to add or multiply mixed fractions directly leads to errors that NCERT specifically tests.
Watch the sign on negative fractions. -3/4 + 1/2 = -3/4 + 2/4 = -1/4, not 5/4. NCERT Class 8 rational numbers chapter is full of sign traps in the exercises.
For division, multiply by reciprocal: a/b divided by c/d equals a/b x d/c. Do not try to divide top-by-top and bottom-by-bottom, which gives wrong answers.
Formula Explanation
Core Fraction Operations Formula
Addition: a/b + c/d = (a x d + c x b) / (b x d) Subtraction: a/b - c/d = (a x d - c x b) / (b x d) Multiplication: a/b x c/d = (a x c) / (b x d) Division: a/b divided by c/d = (a x d) / (b x c)
Where:
- a, c = numerators
-
- b, d = denominators (must be non-zero)
-
- Result is simplified by dividing both by GCD
Example: 2/3 + 5/6 = (2 x 6 + 5 x 3) / (3 x 6) = (12 + 15) / 18 = 27/18 = 3/2 = 1.5 = 1 and 1/2.
Fraction Quick Reference Table
| Operation | Input 1 | Input 2 | Result | Simplified |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add | 1/2 | 1/3 | 5/6 | 5/6 |
| Subtract | 3/4 | 1/8 | 5/8 | 5/8 |
| Multiply | 2/5 | 3/4 | 6/20 | 3/10 |
| Divide | 3/8 | 1/4 | 12/8 | 3/2 |
| Mixed | 1 and 1/2 | 2 and 1/3 | 23/6 | 3 and 5/6 |
Real-World Example
Example: Kavya's NCERT Homework in Bengaluru
Meet Kavya, a 12-year-old Class 7 CBSE student from Bengaluru. Her NCERT exercise 2.2 asks: a recipe needs 3/4 cup flour and the family wants to make 2 and 1/2 times the recipe. How much flour is needed?
Step 1: She converts 2 and 1/2 to improper fraction: 5/2.
Step 2: She enters 3/4 x 5/2 into the calculator.
Step 3: The tool computes (3 x 5)/(4 x 2) = 15/8.
Result: 15/8 simplifies to 1 and 7/8 cups, or 1.875 cups. Kavya verifies her textbook answer matches and confidently moves to the next problem, scoring full 2 marks in her unit test.
