A countdown calculator turns "how long until the event" into exact hours, minutes and seconds. Enter the number of days away and, if you want precision, the hours and minutes on top of that. The tool multiplies the whole span out so you can see it in whichever unit you are planning in.
What the numbers mean
- Days until event is the figure you typed, kept whole, so a 45-day countdown reads 45 even when 6 hours remain on top.
- Total hours is days × 24 plus the extra hours. Ten days and 6 hours is 246 hours.
- Total minutes multiplies that by 60, and total seconds by 60 again. Ten days is 14,400 minutes and 864,000 seconds.
The seconds figure is the one that surprises people. A single day is 86,400 seconds, so a 100-day countdown is 8.64 million seconds. That is the number to use if you are writing a countdown timer in code, where the clock almost always runs in seconds or milliseconds.
A worked example
Diwali is 38 days away and it is 9 in the morning; the lamps go on at 6 in the evening, so the span is 38 days and 9 hours.

If you are splitting a revision plan across that span, 921 hours minus 38 × 8 hours of sleep leaves 617 waking hours. Most students find that a far more useful number than "38 days".
Where the exact count matters
Exam countdowns, project deadlines, a wedding, a product launch, the days to a visa expiry. Two things the calculator does not do
It does not look at your calendar, so it cannot tell you the date on which the countdown ends; give it the day count and it will give you the duration. And it does not adjust for time zones. A launch at 10 am in New York is 7:30 pm in India, so if the two sides are in different zones, work out the span in one zone first.

How many seconds are in a day?
86,400. A day has 24 hours, each of 60 minutes, each of 60 seconds: 24 × 60 × 60 = 86,400. A week is 604,800 seconds and a 30-day month is 2,592,000.
Does the countdown include the current day?
It counts exactly what you enter. If an event is on the 20th and today is the 15th, enter 5 days for the gap between the two dates; add hours and minutes if you want the countdown to a particular time on that day.
Can I count down to a date instead of a number of days?

Why does the calculator not change the day count when I add 25 hours?
The day figure is kept as you typed it so that it matches the way people describe an event, "38 days away". The totals in hours, minutes and seconds include everything you entered.
Is this useful for a countdown timer on a website?
Yes. JavaScript and most other languages count time in seconds or milliseconds, so the total-seconds figure is the one to put into the timer; multiply by 1,000 for milliseconds.
